Photographers Note
Like a drooping clothes line, a series of jagged peaks looms as an impassable curtain. The Lufthansa flight that I am on is flying from Istanbul to Munich, and I have with me a Nikon D-70, equipped with a 70-210 Nikkor lens; I also have my MacIntosh G-4 Laptop. The airplane is equipped with wireless internet which is allowing me to post this image just minutes after actually shooting it. I have performed minor adjustment of the image in PhotoShop, increasing slightly the contrast. In a series of photos I posted at TE recently the photos were 35-mm slides exposed 15-30 years old. As a counterpoint to those ancient slides, this view of the Austrian Alps is no more than 15 minutes old. Technology comes so fast in our age that oversleeping can set us back. Even for someone trained in the sciences, this is an overwhelming experience.

Technology definitely came handy this time Bulent. Excellent capture of the jagged peaks of the alps seen here. The colors and obviously the point of view are excellent. Not always we get to see mountains tis clear from higher above. Nice work taking and posting this picture :-)

Nice work, this is very well composed, with the background ridgeline leading into the foreground mountains. The lighting worked well for you, exposing great detail on the rock faces. Perhaps if you had been able to get the shutter speed a little bit faster it would be a little bit more crisp, as it seems maybe just a little bit soft, but certainly not bad. Thanks!

Hello,
A very special area here. I most like the 'w' formation between the 2 main peaks. Wonderful exploitation of the lighting situation, the drawn out shadows make a most thought provoking sight. You have created excellent clarity here in this photo, I know that photography is never easy through a scratched plane window. best of all, you have managed to avoid snow glare.

Hello Bulent,
Your photograph is very nice.
I'm surprised at the sharpness, the colours and the well mastered contrast. You didn't remove the porthole, did you? ;-))
As concerns technology my first computer (in the 80s) was a Tandy TRS-80 with a cassette and a 32K extension box. So I can evaluate the progress in 25 years' time.

Your note as well as your picture hit me with the impact of a sledge hammer.
That is so true.
21st. century. We can't deny.
Some few years ago, seems to me, those digital weirdos were unimaginable.
Today they are real. You can touch them. Use them. Taste the flavor of them.
Thanks, Bulent.
Splendid, educational post. Wonderful photo.
Even professor couldn't do it more professionally than you just did...!
(Oooops !) (:-)))))).
Have a great trip, dear professor.
Take care.

Hello Professor A
I followed your link to this wonderful photograph you took in flight. These sights are possible only when in higher altitude, in other words from an aero plane. Amazing is the effect of light & shade & you indeed said it correctly
the mountains do look like drooping clotheslines. Youve got pristine & clear air in the stratospheric heights here & hence the clarity is for all to see. Wonder how you avoided the window shape & reflections
With Best Regards

Great!!! I have not seen the Austrian Alps that clear from an airplane since in the late 60:s, when still propeller planes (4.000 m over sea level) were flying!
Usually you only see clouds nowadays.

Hi Bulent,
I was viewing capthaddock's photo of the Andes when I noticed your critique and it lead me to this marvel that I had missed until now.
It's so rare to see such a good contrast and light on shots from commercial airplanes!
A great compo and light control. A beauty!
You are right about technology. Apart from all the rest, it can bring us some little pleasures like posting to TE while aboard a plane something that was also produced while flying.
TFS, Cheers, José.

Merhaba Bulent
Wonderful sharpness for a zoom shot taken from a plane. I like the scalloped edges of the jagged mountains. Tfs!

Wow, this is the first TE post that I have come across that was posted 'live' from an aircraft. I thought Lufthansa had discontinued their on-board Internet service, but maybe this was before that. The quality of this photograph is one of the best that I have seen shot through a commercial aircraft window. Lufthansa must be keeping their windows clean - and you had the light at just the right angle. Very impressive, Bulent. Cheers . . . David

Hi Bulent. I like this window view of the Alps very much. I saw a similar view between Barcelona and Frankfurt a few years ago, before the TrekEarth site roused interest. The Matterhorn is good to see from this POV. This is crystal clear and well presented. Thank you. Murray.

Hello Bulent,
nice wonderful colours and sharpness, really Alps are a photographer delight and as I see you're enjioying them, expecially for the way you posted it. I love the closeness to the
mountains, your eye finds always an amazing point of view.
Kind Regards.

A beautiful composition and so clear. I like the diagonal line of the peaks here Bulent. I recently posted a shot of Mt Adams and I found shooting through the glass of the helicopter created some contrast problems.

Hello Bulent! You were really lucky to come so close to the rocks with an airliner. I know that they shut down a lot of connections but sometimes they reconsider and all of the sudden they are back on the time table :) You had a good eye with this photo. I like how you approached the mountain range and you were fast too ... very often the planned object goes away by the time you have the camera ready. This is very pretty! Have a great day, Barbara.

Merhaba Bulent Bey,
This is a very mind blowing and brave shot, particularly if you're flying on the sawtoothed like mountain chains. Very clear details and nice to see the snow on Alps so close.
The story of posting it on board with high technology also reminded me the fabulous story of "The Bubble About to Burst" which has a rather old but genious technique.
No need to say that you're combining art and science excellently.
P.S. I began to read your fascinating book "Maths and Mona Lisa". This photo reminds me the theme of the book: Combining science and art.
best wishes
selamlar
