Photographer’s Note
Today I have a different type of picture for you. No rule of thirds but a simple centered image. No B&W but plenty of colour. No human presence but an Australian native bird.
Bird watching in Australia is a very important activity for many locals and tourists. And, there are hundreds of different birds all over the country.
The picture shows a Rainbow Lorikeet which is widely distributed along the coastal strip from Cape York south to Victoria and into South Australia. The preferred habitat is coastal forests as well as urban gardens. And noisy flocks of up to several hundred may congregate in flowering trees to feed and roost. Curiously, the same trees can be visit two or three months later when its pods open and expose the seeds. Breeding in the wild is from September to January.
The Rainbow is a popular pet bird in Australia, with probably several thousand being sold each year. A mature bird in Queensland will sell for around A$90, with a hand raised bird being about A$125.
The town where I live, Redcliffe, is just one of those places where they are by the thousands. And at sunset they come in huge numbers to the tall gum trees to spend the night.
The photo I am posting today was taken at sunset and the lorikeet was having a last meal before going to sleep on a nearby eucalypt tree. The flowering tree is about 2m and I was standing less than 1.5m from the tree. They are very active and difficult to stay still for more than a couple seconds. I had the camera set on high speed continuous shooting and I managed a few decent pictures. This is one of them.
The picture in WS shows the best “cheap hotels” (eucalypt trees) in town and you can also see the “restaurant” (small flowering tree) on the left foreground. It is just amazing to observe their arrival and listen to the noisy they make until they fell asleep after the dark sets in.
For more information on this beautiful bird please refer to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow_Lorikeet

Hello Antonio,
I have seen thse beautiful birds myself in Rockhampton and made some pictures, but none of them came out as good as yours you show us here.
I love all the different colours, not only from the bird, but also the colours of the tree. A real beauty this one.
Maybe i have to go back and give it another try.
Thanks for showing this beautiful bird.

A burst of colour here, Antonio, and excellent light on the tree. These birds are amazing, I also have spotted a green parakeet in my garden in Holland (!) Not so colourful as this one, of course:)

Hi Antonio,
These colours are great !
I really like the compo and the DOF.
Only regret : if the head of the bird was in the light, it'd been the perfect pic.
Good job,
JB.

Hi Antonio,
Those rascals bring me nice memories from my visit to Australia. They sure make their presence noted. But still they are not so easy to shoot, choosing often the shady part of trees. You've really got a colourful one here. Just lovely. Sharpening has left some light halo around edges.

Buena foto, amigo.
Saludos,
Josep

Hello Antonio -
What a beautiful bird! If I saw this in my backyard I would be taking bird pictures all the time. The composition and lighting is spot on as is the sharpness. My only comment is the leaves in the foreground, IMO they distract from the overall image. But when you are photographic nature sometimes it is hard to always get the perfect image. Excellent! Well Done!

Ola Antonio,
The framing is stunning here with the curve of the bird and the curve of the branchs giving a very harmoniuos feeling. The bright berries seem to be jewels. Your note about the lorikeet is excellent. They really are noisy. We have a flock of parrots here ihn Ocean Beach, apparently they're escaped pets and you always tell when they're around. The bird I fell in love with in Australia was the Gallah out in the west.

Excelente!

Hi Antonio.
This is for sure a great naturalist shot and I really like the way you composed it, framing tight around the lorikeet and managing to capture its great attitude. It's for sure a little pity the tail is cut out the picture but that's not a big issue, given the quality of the picture.
Thanks for sharing.
