I had a good laugh at Shannon's note, http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Africa/South_Africa/West/Western_Cape/Shark_Alley/photo248295.htm and thought I have to share this photo with TE to give more of a visual explanation of how close it really is.

When I took the photo, three people were in the cage; in the bottom left you can see the one person's hand. The other two persons were next to him on his right-hand side, but under water. The view they had when the shark came so close to the cage must have been amazing. When they rise for air, their eyes were the size of small tea plates and they shouted with enthusiasm....or was it horror?
