Photographer’s Note
This is the 'Iao (pronounced EE-ow) Needle at 'Iao Valley State Park in Wailuku on the island of Maui in Hawaii. The 'Iao Needle is the "little" guy on the left in this photo.
The 'Iao Needle rises 2,250 feet into the air as part of the mountain ranges of the West Maui Mountains. The Needle is a naturally occurring stone pillar that was once used as an altar by the early Polynesians on the island.
The 'Iao Valley is filled with beautiful mountains covered in lush, green trees and plants, bubbling brooks and flowing streams culminating in fresh-water pools and tons of great hiking trails. It is one of the most beautiful areas on Maui.
