Photographer’s Note

What you see here is the tunnel underneath Fremantle Round House.

Intended as a prison, the Round House had eight cells and a jailer's residence, all of which opened onto a central courtyard. It was used for colonial and indigenous prisoners until 1886, when control of the Convict Establishment prison (now Fremantle Prison) was transferred to the colony. After that, the smaller Round House was used as a police lockup until 1900, when it became the living quarters for the chief constable and his family.

The tunnel, built in 1837, allows access from High St through to the Indian Ocean. It has been closed on and off because of safety concerns due to the danger of collapse at the western end.

End of the tunnel, it is Bathers beach, you don't see people bathing there, as Indian Ocean is just next to it.

Today, Round House is opened to the public seven days a week. Entry is by coin donation. You can log your name in visitor book at the entrance. Perhaps you can see my name, dated 13 August 2005.
