Photographer’s Note

What is it about old Mexican musicians that melts my heart? I don't really know but I could watch them all day, with their tarnished trumpets and their well-thumbed sheet music, their crabbed old tanned hands working the valves, attentive yet swingin'. You can sort of imagine them in their youth, playing in black-and-white with Brylcreemed hair, thinking they were very suave. Now the illusions have melted away and they just play music because it's a damn pleasant way to pass the time.

I am a little sorry this guy wanted to pose for me, but I can't blame him for feeling a bit odd about the skinny white girl crouched at his feet...
