From Gold to Oil Photo

Photographer’s Note

An old scene from Calgary. The gold rush that has raged in the region by the end of the XIX th century is now over, but its impact on this originally rural area can be seen in the development of financial institutions like this bank. Traffic is light and will never become a real issue due to the immense spaces available. It is not obvious yet but soon discovery of a new gold called oil will push Alberta several steps higher on the scale of prosperity.

Shot in the Calgary Heritage Park.

This looks more like a watercolour illustration! Your PP treatment suits perfectly the subject, and I like the overall simplicity of the scene. Perhaps the grain is a touch overdone, but I like your approach.

Jean Yves, producing this in 'old-time' sepia but with the splashes of green (another old-time colour) is very effective. The main piece of green being on the doorway of the bank is exactly right, being slightly off-centre and giving an 'inviting' feel. But I'm sure you already know that!

Good post-work to enhance the historical scenery, JY, into which even the included pedestrian is blending nicely. It almost looks like the set of a Buster Keaton movie. The period vehicle is a nice add as well. I know that I'm really nitpicking, but what minimally interferes with the historic postcard impression is the usage of "AB" in the inscription. The two-letter abbreviations for states only became common in the 2nd half of the 20th century; at the period you are reminiscing about it would probably have read "Alta." or something to the like.

Cool. The texture and tones of this shot make it one of your most original works. I would swear that this is a shot from 1900. The PP work here is just incredible.

Hello, photo prise en 1993 tu es sur que c'est pas 1893 :-))) le traitmeent de l'image ainsi que la voiture sur la droite me ait penser a ca... c'êst une ambiance sympa j'adore.

Looks more like 1920 than 1993!
Excellent treatment to achieve this oldfashioned look.The person in front of the bank adds life and context.

Jean Yves, j'aime cette photo rétro en sépia qui nous ramène au temps des premiers films. Je ne savais pas que des centres pareils pouvaient exister. C'est une bonne chose pour un pays qui est relativement jeune.

Great treatment! I like the sepia tone and the addition of the grain, which combine to give this an antique feel. Maybe the contrast could be turned up a little, but otherwise it is an amazing piece of work. Well done!

T'as pris tes plaques de verres et ta grosse chambre photographique !
C'est une bonne idée d'avoir fait une photo dans le style des premières photos et avec colorisation à la main.

Dire qu'il y en a qui achète des reflex numériques, rien ne vaut les appareils des pionniers

Well processed image. If it were not on TE, and without the modern dress of the lady, I'd guess it is a really old photo. Well done and quite inspiring.

Very creative use of colour here, and one that catches the mood of the times. I like the car in particular as it adds a real sense of history. The grainy effect is nice and atmospheric and the composition works well. Good work.
