Photographer’s Note
this is something that has more to do with the idea of thought said in the photo then with the photo itself.
My imagination wasn't streching boundaries here, I was just at exhibition watching this video about war in Sarajevo (Bosnia) and i was amazed with great patience and tolerance of people who were in this docummentary after all that happened to them during the war.I was also touched with their simple wisdom.
this photo is not about the war but what we have to do to overcome this painful period and forget it, to become human and friends again.not to hate each other but to love and live with each other.
.
I took this photo some time ago and acctually I didn't want to post it here but something happend what changed my mind;
the day before yesterday I found out that one of the reported, who I admire, of a TV social/political show got fired. Fired, as many claim, on political thermes and not cause of the mistakes that he supposedly made, as national TV directors claim.
the whole story begun when he touched in one of his show the question of croatian participation in agression on Sarajevo.
to be honest this had stab my heart and this was the first voice for me. and if this trully happend, then I'm truly ashamed.as I'm ashamed for many other things that happend during this ugly war.
but if this is the truth then I'm for the truth to come out so that finally we can pass over this war that finished 10 years ago,and which is still in our hearts and minds; war who swallowed my childhood, war who made people to hate each other; those who used to love each other.
as I understood this was policial move cause of the freedom of one great reporter, reporter who spend many days on war field during that time.
so...so much about freedom of speach in croatia.
I just hope that with time most of people will ambrace the words of this wise ladies.
WE HAVE TO BUILD LOVE.WE BUILT LOVE FOR FIFTY YEARS.
we can not hide behind wall of supposed inocence cause war isn't inocent.

Despite this terrible event, I hope that some more people will follow this reporter example and speak openly of the events, no matter how painful they may be. That’s the best way to do it and the only way for people in your country to realize the extent and seriousness of the happenings beyond their own personal suffering. Portugal had a 13 year war, which ended about 30 years ago (comparing and considering the scales, it was twice deadlier to Portugal than US in Vietnam) and no one speaks openly of it!
Nowadays, many men which participated in the war as well the populations are very traumatized by this event in Portugal as well in Angola, Mozambique and Guiné-Bissau and the silence does not help overcome this problems. Only now the reporters started to talk mildly about massacres our troops made in Africa, where all the men, women and children were executed in some villages…
The soldiers who, in a madness moment, committed these acts have been suffering since them, tormented by their acts. Some of them have returned to the places to apologise to the few surviving victims of those days. It was the first step for them to overcome those moments, and it was a heart-breaking moment to see 50 year old men crying like children and asking for forgiveness to the survivors.
Regarding your photo I like the lot the BW and hard contrast effect, although I think it would be nice to have someone’s silhouette over the screen to bring a more human feeling to the moment.

I am with you here in this strong, disturbing but ultimately triumphant image. I like your thick black frame, the grainy image, yur note, the title. The entire package is immensely powerful, not pretty, but deep.
Bravo, Ana, bravo!

Ana, this is very moving, I love your choice of image and really feel moved by what you write, you are so right, truth has to come out to the surface, I am from Hungary and this issue has always been so strong with us too, but yes, we need to side with light and truth. And it is wonderful that you take the image of a DARK movie theatre, and show the film that is LIGHT projected on the canvas...
I believe that truth will prevail even if it takes time.
Thanks for your image, your post. Really good, strong, very good stuff.
