Barong is some kind of dragon-like creature often seen in a big festivals in Bali. It is some kind of a demon manifestation. In Balinese ceremonies, it is often that the sprits of the earth ("evil" spirit) is being summoned to "enter' the barong to be manifested as a guest during the ceremony. The Barong neesds to be entertained with offerings to keep it happy. After the ceremonies, the priests of the temple summon the barong back to where it came from.

I took the photo during the Galungan ceremony at Pura Peliatan, Bali.
