Photographer’s Note
I took this shot the day before I left India for home. My interpreter and good friend, Samuel, took me to watch a group of students play cricket. Samuel's mother is the prinipal of the school these students attend. They were playing in one of the fields of a local college, and it reminded me very much of a Roman colliseum. It was a lot of fun to watch them play, and to see the youthful enthusiasm for the game.
I saw kids all over the state playing cricket, which, of course, is India's favourite sport.
As of the time of the posting of this picture more than 18,000 people are believed dead and 41,000 injured after Saturday's earthquake that devastated parts of Pakistan, India and Afghanistan. Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has urged more international aid, as the toll in Pakistan, alone, reaches 14,800.
I would like to dedicate this shot to those who have lost their lives, many of whom are children, and to offer a prayer for the survivors who must now piece their lives back together, as best they can.
