Photographer’s Note

Update! I changed the name from characters to pinyin as it wasn't showing up properly. The name should be:

一二三!

The name means simply: "One, two, three!"

Shot in a Beijing Hutong (a section past Qianmem gate for those that know the area; for those that don't Qianmen gate is at the far end of Tiananmen Square, almost like an opposition to Tiananmen gate) on an exceptionally hot day.

I met a young girl on Tiananmen Square the previous day and we arranged to meet up and visit the Hutong to get some photos. This was my second visit but far more fun than the first time -- as many people will already know, hutong is a style of housing famous in China and particularly Beijing. The characteristics are narrow alleyways joining old buildings with inner courtyards and so-on. What I didn't realise the first time was just how narrow some of the alleyways could be... but with a Chinese friend the characters on some doors I had previously written off as private residences were available to me. They were not private residences but some of the narrowest alleys in the Hutong!

I managed to get this shot about half-way through our little tour and I must say I'm very proud of it. I like the framing and the way the light falls on the tricycles. This type of trike is very common throughout China for transport of absolutely anything -- people, animals, cloth, food, stone... you name it and it will have been moved by one of these trikes!

I hope you can enjoy this photo as much as me. Thanks.
