Photographer’s Note
I used to joke that you could never take a good depressing photo of a beggar kid in Addis Ababa because they were always smiling. But, it's true. The smiles were just amazing - though I sometimes found it impossible to understand how they could be smiling considering how hard their hard lives are.

It is not usual that we see a shot of such exhuberance from Ethopia. What the news sources show us is not the few bright spots in this place, but the sadness expressed in their lives. This shot shows us that amidst the hard life that surrounds the children in Ehtopia, there is something that can bring out a smile. You show happiness while we see a fly on the boy's ear, a runny nose and a dirty face. Thumbs up! That may be a better title for this photo. :)
