Photographer’s Note

The tanneries of Fes

Taking a walk by the narrow streets of Fes, we finally arrived at the tanneries quarter, situated at the far north of the medina, beside the city walls.
From the street, you can see nothing that happens inside of the tanneries, so you have to go up to the roofs of the houses or leather shops, from where you can see the whole tannery.
the souk resembles an enormous honeycomb, as you can see in this general view, with the coloured vats arranged with geometric precision into units of four, six, eight or twelve.
All around the souk, hanging from the walls of the old houses, were the finished leather, assorted according to their colour (here you can see, from left to right: yellow, dark-brown and clear-brown, but there were also of black).
To see these men working in the tanners, also reactivates the senses of the vision and above all of the smell, by the strong scents that gives off the process to work the leather.
(As a workshop I have post another general view, with the city at the background)
