Photographers Note
This was taken outside the "Dachau Concentration Camp" just outside of Munich, in the town of Dachau. You are seeing one of the doors of the camp with the famous "Arbeit macht frei (Work brings freedom)" sign.
Thank god, people inside are simply tourists not prisoners...

You can read "arbeit macht frei" on your photo which pretty much means "work sets you free" (le travail rend libre). How could they write something like that when they knew there was no escape whatsoever! This is such a sad place and you were right to take the colors off.

This shot is like coming out of 1940's... Black and white is definitely a good choice to express the mood over there. Very successful composition. Regards,

serhat bey,

I stood inside that very same gate in October of 2003. I took a photograph of the reverse side.
I believe the proper translation is "Work will make (set) you free".
Arbeit = Work
Macht = Power
Frei = Free
A direct translation is: "Work Power Freely".
It suffices to say: Work Clears, which we know was not the case for the poor souls within these walls during that era. A sad affair in human history, one among many.
As I recall, it is a very erie feeling to stand at those gates and to think, to consider what took place. What human beings were capable of doing to other human beings in such a vicious and ferrocious manner.
Amazing something so terrible could did serve to fulfill Biblical prophecy --
One of the 3 signs of Jesus return: Luke Chapter 21
After almost 1900 years of being separated from thier homeland, the Jewish people have returned, no other country, or people can make this claim in recorded history. Luke: 21:24 Listen here
peace,
haans :)
