Photographer’s Note

This is one of many houseboats on Fisherman's Wharf in Victoria's Inner Harbour. Have you ever wondered what it is like living on a houseboat? I did, and when I asked one of the houseboat owners, she sold me a booklet for a dollar. Here’s an excerpt (as told through the voice of a resident blue heron):

“… I cannot think of anywhere I’d rather live. It seems this is true for the majority of us, the humans too. There are always one or two transient ‘would be wharfies’ but most have lived here 10 years or more. All can be heard at one time or another lamenting the lack of space, the constant tourist questions, the persistent winter winds and the limited amenities, but a couple of warm days sitting on the wharf drinking tea in the sun talking to their neighbors or watching me fish or the otters cavorting and all the little annoyances disappear. For me, I sum it up this way:…”

“The tide comes in,
and
The tide goes out,
and
All is right with the world.”

(from the booklet titled “Fish Tales From Fisherman’s Wharf”, by H. Pendray II)

Don’t you just love the potted flowers, and the barbeque grill and picnic table on the roof of this boat? Such a view from up there, and no lawns to mow! Hope you enjoy this peek into a different lifestyle as much as I did.
