We have friends for a visit from the US and this was a great opportunity to go visit Old City of Jerusalem which we haven;t done for a long time.
One of the main points of interest we went to was the Holy Spepulcher Church that many pilgrims visit for the Christmas, the church is huge and this image capture a fracture of it. here are some more details:
The Church of the Holy Sepulcher is where the last five stations of the ''Via Dolorosa'' are. The agonizing route Jesus went through with a cross on his back on the way to Gulgotha - where he was crucified, where he died and where he was resurrected. For a large part of the Christian world, who believe, this is the location of Gulgotha, it is their holiest place in Jerusalem.The first to claim the identification of the place was Helena, mother of Byzantine emperor Constantine, in the year 324. According to stories that turned to tradition, Helena initiated excavation in the place, in which signs came up that identified the place implicitly, among them were the tomb of Christ and the crosses of Christ and the two thieves crucified with him. In 326 Constantine started building the church around the Holy Sepulcher which he finished in 335. Since then it was destroyed and rebuilt several times. The crusaders, in 1194, inaugurated the current building. It is open to visitors (in modest clothes). The route of the ''Via Dolorosa'' starts at the Lions Gate. The church is in the Christian quarter.
