Photographer’s Note

The Palatine Hill,
(Latin: Collis Palatium or Mons Palatinus) is the centermost of the Seven Hills of Rome and is one of the most ancient parts of the city. It stands 40 metres above the Forum Romanum, looking down upon it on one side, and upon the Circus Maximus on the other.

It is the etymological origin of the word "palace" and its cognates in other languages (Italian "Palazzo", French "Palais" etc).
According to Roman mythology, the Palatine Hill was the location of the cave, known as the Lupercal, where Romulus and Remus were found by the she-wolf that kept them alive. According to this legend, the shepherd Faustulus found the infants, and with his wife Acca Larentia raised the children. When they were older, the boys killed their great-uncle (who seized the throne from their father), and they both decided to build a new city of their own on the banks of the River Tiber. Suddenly, they had a violent argument with each other and in the end Romulus killed his twin brother Remus. This is how "Rome" got its name - from Romulus. Another legend to occur on the Palatine is Hercules' defeat of Cacus after the monster had stolen some cattle. Hercules struck Cacus with his characteristic club so hard that it formed a cleft on the southeast corner of the hill, where later a staircase bearing the name of Cacus was constructed

Colle Palatino

Il colle Palatino è uno dei sette colli di Roma, situato tra il Velabro e il Foro, ed è una delle parti più antiche della città. Il sito è ora un grande museo all'aperto e può essere visitato durante il giorno. L'ingresso si trova vicino all'Arco di Tito nel Foro Romano.
Il Palatino è uno dei colli centrali di Roma, ma a differenza del Campidoglio e l'Aventino è vicino al fiume ma non adiacente ad esso. L'altezza massima è di 51 metri s.l.m.. Il colle guarda da un lato sul Foro Romano e dall'altro sul Circo Massimo.

La sommità centrale era detta Palatium, mentre il pendio che digrada verso il Foro Boario e il Tevere era anticamente chiamato Germalus. È collegato al retrostante Esquilino tramite una sella e una sommità secondaria, la Velia.

The lighting and colors are great and the threatening sky reminds me of my day in Rome when we went to this site. The only difference is that he rained like mad when I was there. Your composition is great showing the differing levels of the hill.

Un cielo che sembra di lana, sei uno specialista in nuvole Giorgio!
Molto ben realizzata ... ma non è del walking, scommetto che avrete fatto una marea di scatti e devi ancora selezionare èh!...mi è dispiaciuto non poter venire.

Fine Roman ruins and terrific clouds. This is a timeless scene, and the ultra-dramatic clouds make it look like an 18th century painting. It's a very distinct photo with excellent sharpness and light.

Questo cielo d'apocalisse è un migliore effetto sopra le rovine leggendarie. Non si sa grande cosa di riassunto sull'origine di Roma, ma la leggenda resta seducente. Gradisco la presenza della vegetazione che dà più presenza e colori ai muri. Una superbia immagine, congratulazioni.

davvero bello vedere il palatino inm queste condizioni di cielo. I colori sono poi splendidi.

PS: ho comprato la d40 ma con l'obiettivo originale Nikkor 18-55 bensì con obiettivo 18-200 della Sigma. L'ho provata ma in anteprima i colori mi paiono parecchio smorti (e spesso falsati) rispetto alla realtà. Non ho ancora provato a scaricare le foto sul pc ma mi pare strano che in anteprima i colori siano così scadenti.

Ciao Giorgio. Siccome dalla foto di Ludo ho visto luci e colori di domenica ritengo che questa volta la raccomadazione divina era stata richiesta - ed ottenuta- per tutto il fine settimana. Addirittura ti sei fatto confezionare un cielo da oscar solo per il sabato.....e solo per te. Vedi di provvedere per novembre eh!

Well metered exposure with correct contrast levels. The clouds look just great. Nice colors too on the ruins and vegetation.

Uuuuhhh! Che razza di minaccia temporalesca sulla villa della contessa Esmeralda... Ma lei ride tutta contenta: adora i temporali, specie se accompagnati da fulmini terribili e tuoni tremendi. E' quello che le piace di più. D'altra parte bisogna capirla: ha 405 anni. Ovviamente é uno spettro. E, Giorgio, non ti consiglio di avvicinarti più di tanto alla villa: io conosco assai bene la nobildonna e qualche volta diventa davvero sgradevole...
Eccellente immagine, quella che la vecchia signora ti ha concesso di scattare. Sei stato sul serio fortunato: con tutta evidenza era di buon umore...
