Photographer’s Note
I have taken this image when travelling back from the JipiDay TE Meeting in Lille in june 2008, making a quick lunch stop in Calais I shot the local landmark. This city hall is a very nice example of flemish architecture and its 75m high belfry is listed on the UNESCO world heritage.

Hello Jean-Yves,

Hello Jean-Yves,
The long red path makes a splendid lead line taking us towards the complementary tones of the wonderful architecture. Both of these offer good tonal contrasts with the adjacent greenery and the brooding heavily charged sky. A fine presentation with good mastery of the lighting conditions.

Hello Jean Yves,
Fantastic building, UNESCO listed belfry, perfect garden – and yet it's that dark sky that really makes this picture, in my opinion. The dark clouds give a special quality to the green grass and the façade of the building.

Hello Jean Ives.
Beautiful architecture that of this Town hall, A good POV the chosen one with the parallel lines that form the way and lawn converging towards I build, they give a major depth. The gray sky and the beautiful flowerbed of flowers create a few nice contrasts of color.
Have a nice week.

Bonjour JY
The architecture, as you said, is indeed very Flemish. The perspective is well created and the red building looks good against the dark clouds...there seems to be slice of light in the lower half of the building, which makes that part glow. The flowers add a good burst of colour as well
Best Regards

Ciao dear Jean Yves,
to manage the light in this image is not simple, especially when the brightness and the fidelity of the colors are maintained without the least presence of noise. To the excellent photographic technique it needs to also add the good composition, where all the lines converge toward the castle in pleasant way. Compliments dear friend, in this image you show that the skies are also beautiful when they are not blue.
Ciao, have a very nice day!

Hi JY,
is it real or just the perspective correction made the tower so cool? If it is, I have to go there and see it by myself! It is worth a trip. The architecture is so beautiful and the decoration details fantastic!
It seems that you used the ND filter. I always hesitate if there is something standing out from the ground because it gets partially darker (so I almost never use it). But the sky would be indeed boring without it. I would prefer HDR instead. It would darken the sky without darkening the tower.
I like the compostion very much, it is a beautiful postcard.
And the place is so picturesque! I have to visit it.
Thanks for sharing it.

This is a fine shot of this great architecture which has been taken under excellent light. The off center path leads the eye into the shot nicely giving the photo a nice sense of direction. The dark sky provides nice contrast for this brightly lit scene.
