Old shearer's quarters again Photo

Photographer’s Note

The sun is setting on the old shearer's quarters on a rural property in NW Queensland.

The shearer's quarters were built in the 1920s when this property was a thriving sheep station and were last used in 1948 when the property converted to running cattle.

Hi Marlene.
I thought when I saw this one load that it would be one of your old shots, from decades ago. It could be; there's not a sign of contemporary life to be seen, notwithstanding the bird on the wing. The building on the left, leaning, is the quintessence of tumbledown and ramshackle. These sorts of establishments, long unused and ghostly in their way, make me stop and ponder the passing of time and try to imagine them full of life. The evening light and long shadows are perfect for the subject. I hadn't seen the other photo previously, but perhaps it's even better in a way, although it doesn't convey the rusted decrepitude so well. Great shot of a piece of unsung history.

Hello Marlene,
I remembered the well composed previous photo from this place. This one is interesting in a quite different way by showing what can happen when people leave a place and nature takes over. I always feel a certain sorrow when seeing once prosperous enterprises abandoned to a slow but inevitable decay. The warm afternoon light becomes the twilight of a lifestyle of the past.

Nice to see a closer view of the old shearer's quarters, with this warm light.
It seems like it was left in the 1940s and nothing happened here since then.

The late afternoon light lends a sad feeling to the place, and the colour of rust stands out well in the sunshine...

Hello Marlene,
the rays of the setting sun add a special warm tint to this image, which I like very much. I also like a special softness (a bit blurred, not over-sharpened).
Very well composed shot! and the birdie happened to fly by as well ;)
Hmmm.... not too many changes "under the Moon" in some parts of this world, as I see?.....

I love the colours in this one - taken late afternoon for the long shadows? There are so many old farm buildings about and beautiful in their decrepitness. One good storm will finish off the shed on the left.

Is that a bird flying up high in the sky. The sun showering on the surface really works to your favour. I like the light and shadow management in this shot and the effect is brilliant.

Hello Marlene,

Nice up close and personal of the quarters, the sun setting casts beautiful light on the buildings and there are some interesting textures in the buildings.
