Photographer’s Note

This church devoted to the Great Martyr Saint Catherine of Alexandria is situated at the outskirts of Feodosiya close to railway station Ayvazovska. The church was built in 1871 at the expense of the city’s people at the initiative and under the direction of Vasiliy Ivanovich Lapshin (1809 - 1888), who was a prominent scientist, doctor on mathematics, professor of physics, geography and meteorology in universities of Novorossiysk (nowadays Odessa) and Kharkiv. One of his main research works was devoted to the ways of calculation of the Ester Day's date.
