Photographer’s Note
In China bargaining over price is a way of life. Here at the dirt-market, known as the Ghost-Market or in Chinese (panjiayuan) bargaining is raised to a fine art. A price is launched by the owner, you counter, the owner counters, and slowly the distance narrows until a price is agreed. There is skill involved as the owner will state your price will do him great financial loss. You make a bid and then start walking away - surprise, they go down more. The game is well played and often the owner shows respect for a real challenge and enjoys a good pricing game. This is a part of the unique feature of China that is being replaced by the Walmart fixed price system - as many Chinese stores have adopted. You pay what you see on the tag. No fun!
