Photographer’s Note

Taken during the start to The Tall Ships' Races 2009 Baltic on the waters near Gdynia. The race start is particularly spectacular as all the vessels under full sail try to make every effort to get the best position for the rest of the competition. The sight of them catching wind can hardly be compared to any other sight.

In the picture there is the Polish barquentine Pogoria chasing the German barque Alexander von Humboldt.

It is probabely one of the last pictures of the Pogoria taken before she was a subject to a pitiful accident during the races resulting in her being dismasted and retired off the competition.

Hey Kris - nice job! There are lots of things to like about this photo. First, I like the composition. The boat with the green sails is in full view in the background. The boat with the white sails is just coming into the frame. It gives the photo a sense of action. I know by looking at it that it is a race. You also did a good job keeping the sea down in the bottom third of the photo. Of course, the colors and details are fantastic, too. Really good job!

Hi Kris,
I came across your interesting gallery because this image immediately caught my eye. I really like your idea of this composition and you have captured a dramatic atmosphere of the race. Furthermore you were very lucky with this amazingly beautiful sky, but nevertheless I am afraid that the water might be too dark. It is a beautiful image anyway. TFS!
