Photographer’s Note

This is a more general view that includes my previous picture of the Polder Het Koegras, in the province of Noord-Holland.
This photo was shot from the vantage point on the dunes (foreground) that separate the polder from the North Sea.
Het Koegras was part of the sea before it was reclaimed and drained, like other polders in the Netherlands. In 1610 the former islands of Callantsoog and Huisduinen were connected by the Oldenbarneveldsdijk (dike). The construction of the Noordhollandsch Kanaal, in the 1820s, helped the creation and development of the Koegras polder.
Nowadays the main production of these fields are flowers and bulbs, as you can notice already in the yellow parts of this early April shot.
The Netherlands is a country of experts in water management and agriculture. In the workshop you can see illuminated glasshouses (greenhouses), some 25 km southwards, near Heerhugowaard.
Location in WikiMapia: 52.915579, 4.7200871.
