COLLAGE

Saturday August 9, 2008: the cruise ship, Crystal Serenity, on which I had been giving guest lectures, was anchored at the Island of Corfu. Strategically significant in light of its location just off the west coast of the Greek Mainland, Corfu has managed, nonetheless, to maintain its uniqueness through numerous vicissitudes — including invasions, occupations and tyrants. The culture of Corfu seems to echo the island’s turbulent past.

St. Spyridon Church, in front of which I took this photograph, is unmistakable for its spire that towers above all others on the island. The occasion is especially memorable since the bells on the Bell Tower (ws) had just begun to peel the twelve bongs signaling noon. The worshipers paused to plant candles in the sand inside the candle seller’s cart. The parallel glass panes of the cart, approximately 1.2 meters apart, served partly to transmit and partly to reflect the scene, seemingly creating a collage. I was inspired to submit this image after seeing a recent post, Celebrating Easter, by Stella Leivadi (stelli). This photo is in gratitude to Stella.

Nikon D200, Nikkor 28-200 mm lens, fill flash.
