Photographer’s Note
SWALLOW’S NEST
This is not a great photo, but it is a great view. I had been giving lectures on the Crystal Serenity, the magnificent cruise ship of the Crystal Cruise Line, when the ship visited the port of Yalta in the Crimea. I had only a few hours to take a tour bus making a shore excursion to the Swallow’s Nest Castle on the Yalta-Sevastopol road. I can imagine the views one might have here with better light, for example in a sunset or in soupy fog with the horizon vanishing into the fog, and I am certain much better photographs of the site have been posted. In 2007, I had posted another shot of Yalta, shot in 1998, showing Yalta in thick fog. The scene was the Livadia Palace where in 1945 a secret summit meeting brought together Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin.
In 1912 the wealthy businessman Baron von Steinheil, a Baltic German nobleman who had made a fortune in drilling for oil in the Baku region of Azerbaijan, hired the Russian architect, Leonid Sherwood, to build a “romantic hideaway.” The architect rendered his design in a mix of neo-Moorish and Scotish Baronial style, inspired by another fairy tale castle, Neuschwantein, in Bavaria (1886). Compared to the latter, this structure is much more modest and compact, but what a view! Swallow’s Nest Castle was built on a 40 m (120 ft) high promontory overlooking the Black Sea, and at a site once occupied by the third century Roman fortress, Castrum Charax. (A far more impressive image appears at the commercial site, NationMaster. The castle appears to be perched on a platform cantilevered precipitously over the sea. But, in surviving a massive earthquake in 1927, it proved it possessed impressive structural integrity.

Hi Bulent,
Oh, I think this qualifies for the "great shot" category. Wonderful composition more than makes up for any shortcomings due to time of day and atmospherics.
An amazing capture of an amazing structure.

A building more vertiginous than this would be difficult to imagine. It does look very much like a fairy tale castle, but Rapunzel would have to grow her hair even longer to let it all the way down the cliff. ;D
The small detail of the ship in the background is good for balance in the composition.

Good morning dear Bulent
You are right in that when you stay in a place you have the opportunity to capture the best of the scenes chosing the right time and conditions. Hoever, places like that do not need any "make up" to show their unique beauty. Excellent view, sharp details and the inclusion of the boat is a nice finishing touch to it.

hi Bulent
When you set the cliff and building on its edge against the blue sky or sea, surely you have a winner element, but when you introduce a ship and the horizon is lost between the sea and sky, it is a jackpot win! Very well presented and I really admire this beautiful scenery.
Swallow's nest castle, really quite extraordinary perched on the cliff top.

I've seen several photos of this place, and it never fails to fascinate me. what a view, what a location! I like a lot how you have composed the photo, leaving a lot of room for the pure blue of the sea, I find it conveys very well the feeling of wide open space and freedom the place must have. excellent timing to have the ship in frame, it certainly adds to the surreal mood. great shot, my compliments.

Olá Bulent, we cannot have the best weather conditions all the time (in fact, I don't have it most of the times) but you still had a fairly good light here. And the view is stunning. I believe that even with rain this would give a good photo. And you were smart enough to include a ship passing by in the right spot of the composition. The architecture seems eager to jump to the sea and catch a ride to exotic destinations ;-)

Hello Bülent,
I don't agree at all that it isn't a great photo. The view is breath taking and the little castle very romantic. I like how it stands out against that immense blue sea, perched on the top of that cliff. The higher POV makes it look like a toy. The ship passing in the BG gives a nice balance. Bulent,
I don't agree with your assessment regarding this shot. It is a great shot, although there are some elements that could be done to make it better. A better lens to improve the resolution and a polarizing filter to cut through the haze are almost mandatory. The composition? Yes it is great and the addition of the ship in the background is perfect.

I like this one for the simplicity of the composition - sometimes less is more.
It could still do with tightening up a bit in my opinion - personally I'd lose the sky at the top and have less of the cliff at the bottom of the frame.
It's a good shot though.
Cheers,
Ben

Hi my friend Bulent,
Lovely composition! Beautiful ocean view castle! Excellent visual balance between the ship and the castle. Great POV, colors and sharpness.
Have a nice weekend
