Photographer’s Note

I’m interrupting my USA travelogue to post a topical image taken closer to home. From the different people who have asked me about the snow in the UK it must be world news. We are in the grip of a weather system from Siberia, and although we are known as a wet, cold country it doesn’t often snow. That means the authorities don’t invest in the efficient snow clearing equipment used by countries used to snow, and drivers don’t have snow tyres or chains. This means when we do have a lot of snow, the country comes to a virtual standstill.

Actually on the Northeast coast where I live there has been a lot less snow than elsewhere and what has fallen has soon thawed, although today's offering seems to be hanging around! However on the North Yorkshire Moors not many miles away there is plenty. We went to take some photos. This one is of Danby Dale taken from the top of the road into Botton Village, which is a community for people with learning disabilities, and is about 7 or 8 miles from home.

Just for fun, in the WS is a snap Rob took while I was knee deep in snow.
