Photographer’s Note

Beach shot from a recent trip to Pacific Rim National Park, on the extreme west coast of Canada. There are 3 units to the park - the West Coast Trail, The Broken Group, and Long Beach. This is part of the Long Beach unit, which features long stretches of beach and the ever present waves. There is no land between Long Beach and Japan, not even small islands (Hawaii is far to the south and the Aleutian Islands to the north, making the north Pacific one of the longest stretches of open water in the world.

Hi Alvin,
This shot is very different from your other ones; it is softer and more dreamy,which works great for this kind of photos.
What I like the most is the superb texture of the wave "dying" on the beach.
The composition,as always,impeccable:)

D200 ? Ah OK going to the beach on low risk ! Agree with Nelu a different shot of yours but with that low speed I can feel the scratch from the retiring wave, the island faded in the distance is a nice detail. The WS exagerates the colors way too much.

Nice one, Alvin - a bit of an artistic and abstract touch due to the slow speed, and the way in which you are filling the majority of the frame with the sweeping water. I also like the mood with the lighting, and the background scenery partially hidden by the drizzle. It's good to see you trying something different every once in a while.

I like the softness & motion blur here. Good sharpness & muted colours. The yellow glint of the reflected sunshine contrasts well against the blue water. Tfs!

Hi Alvin,

A very strange but also very creative shot. It's the foreground what makes it complete different from what we normally see from a beach. The ws is imo a bit too much because for me these soft colours bring the right mood inside, especially on the horizon. I see you still have your D200, kind of backup camera i suppose.

Beautiful light here. The one little island makes for a great focal point and the slower shutter speed creates lines that lead the eye to the horizon. I must say that I do not care for the WS as it looks too overdone.

A little bit dangerous for your camera with the wind, sand and sea salt.
Excellent depth picture, the waves in background care for an attractive picture.

Alvin, you are saying that there isn't any island between where you stood and shot this and Japan? I think I can see a little island coming out of the mist ... ;-)
This is an interesting shot with a prologued openning (1s?). I don't think that it is someting ready for the big presentation, but something that has the character of study, development, potential to use the idea for something greater.

Hi Alvin,

The capture of the power of the ocean is an asset to the composition. The use of a tripod and a slow exposure time gave an excellent photo. The point of view takes our eys toward the horizon which is giving depth to the photo. The light is enhancing the colors of the scenery. have a nice day.
