Like Hawaii, Alaska is geographically separated from continental U.S. Believe it or not, this vast land was purchased from Russia for $7.2 million (about 2 cents per acre) in 1867. It was admitted as the 49th state of the U.S. in 1959.

Our cruise journey was a round trip from Vancouver, Canada. We arrived in Vancouver three days earlier. Spent one day in Victoria. Also, we stayed extra two days after the cruise. Rented a SUV heading to Whistler via Sea-to-Sky Highway.

The cruise route was mainly in southeastern Alaska. The theme was glacier. In Juneau, I was first time in my life riding on a helicopter and landed on top of the Mendenhall Glacier. Then did a couple-hour glacier trek. Up close with glacial icescape was just amazing. Glacier Bay National Park was another highlight of our trip. I’d wanted to see as many glaciers as possible before they disappear. This was checked from my travel list.
