My wife, Margaret, and I have long wanted to do a decent driving trip to Western Australia. For various reasons it kept getting postponed. Finally we've made the trip clocking up over 15,000 kilometres along the way. Along the way are many varied and fascinating sights, some well know, others a little off the beaten track. We just travelled in our trusty Subaru Forester and staying in self catering accommodation along the way - that made it much easier to stop when and where we liked for photos with out the hassle of a trailer or caravan. My first, headline, photo will be from Karajini National Park, one of the highlights of the trip followed by photos in the order of our trip.
The trip took us across the south of NSW via the Sturt Highway. Once in South Australia we had a break on the Yorke Peninsula at Wallaroo in an area of old copper mines and many Cornish mine structures. We then caught a car freey across Spencers Gulf to the Eyre Peninsula and worked our way along the coast to Ceduna. There we picked up the Eyre Highway to travell coastal across the Nullabor Plain to Western Australia making plenty of stops to view whales and cliffs.
The proper Nullabor Plain (ie the part with no trees) is in SA with much of the crossing in WA being through some beautiful forests.
We spent a week or so exploring the goldfields of WA - huge open pit mines, grand glodrush architecture and ghost towns.
From there we worked our way up to the Pilbara region with all its iron ore mines and the superb Karijini National Park.
Especially in Western Australia our trip took us to many interesting and beautiful places that aren't represented on TE so there will be quite a few new locations added in the course of this travelogue.
