Ibitipoca was founded in 1692 during the "gold cycle". Located in the path of gold (Estrada Real), between Vila Rica (current Ouro Preto) and the port of Paraty. Nowadays, Ibitipoca has no more than 200 houses and two churches.

The best way to go to Ibitipoca is from Juiz de Fora City. Juiz de Fora is accessible by car or bus from Rio de Janeiro (180Km) or by plane from São Paulo (600Km). Ibitipoca Village is about an hour drive outside of downtown Juiz de Fora.
