I first learned last fall that Marinette County, Wisconsin, a couple hours’ drive from where I live, boasts a fine assortment of waterfalls. I thought then it would be great fun to visit, and last weekend, I was able to pull it off, thanks to a rare Saturday free from work. It was well worth the trip. A Midwestern Village Memorial Day by Jim Pinkham (844) 2007-05-28 - 2007-05-28

I spent Memorial Day in Wrightstown, a growing but comfortably small Wisconsin village, population 2,500. The village celebrated the patriotic holiday with a parade that included solemn ceremonies at a cemetery and the bridge that spans the heart of the community. Next came food, festivities, and ceremony at the local American Legion Post. A Civil War re-enactment followed at the village founder’s house, now a museum. This past weekend I visited the uppermost reaches of Lower Michigan, the Straits of Mackinac area, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. For part of the trip it was the first visit in more than a decade; for the U.P., it was my first time back since my honeymoon (way back in...but that would be telling).
