Hokkaido - February '04 by Martin Bailey
(1329) 2004-02-13 - 2004-02-16
From February 13 to 16, 2004, I went back to Hokkaido on a photo tour with 18 other amateur photographers and two well known Japanese professionals, Hiroshi Yokoyama and Yoshiaki Kobayashi. I'd wanted to go back in Winter after my week long trip to the same area in August 2003. You can also check out my other travelogue from that trip on TrekEarth.
This travelogue has been published unfinished so that you group photos as I upload them. It's probably going to take a few weeks, but once all the shots are uploaded I'll complete this text too. (16 photos)

Hokkaido - August '03 by Martin Bailey
(1329) 2003-08-04 - 2003-08-11
I've been attracted to Hokkaido for the last 9 years or so, ever since I bought a CD-ROM of photos from Kushiro Shitsugen (Marsh) that blew my mind. I love places of natural beauty, and there aren't that many of these in Tokyo. Tokyo is a very photogenic city and has easy access to many beautiful places too, so I certainly not knocking it. But I wanted to go somewhere unspoiled, as much of Hokkaido is. For this reason, I decided not to add Sapporo, Otaru and Hakodate to the agenda. Sapporo is a large city which I wanted to ... Narita Gion Matsuri (Festival) by Martin Bailey
(1329) 2003-07-05 - 2003-07-05
Most people visiting Japan (myself included for the last twelve years) only think of Narita as the place with the international airport, never thinking to stop-off and take a look around. My trip there on July 5th '03 showed me another side of Narita that was pleasantly surprising. It's a small City but has a lot of history. The first mentions of the Naritasan Gion Matsuri (Festival)itself date back to the sixth year of the Kyouhou Era (1721).
Narita City in the Chiba Prefecture hosted the Gion Matsuri on the nearest Friday, Saturday and Sunday to July 7, 8 and 9. ... (full story) (8 photos)

Day in Kamakura by Martin Bailey
(1329) 2003-05-24 - 2003-05-24
On May 24th, 2003 my wife and I went to Kamakura for the day. I've been to Kamakura many times, but this was the first day out with my new Canon EOS 10D. We enjoyed the day, and the improvements in the 10D over the D30 probably helped me to get more TrekEarth-uploadable photos in such a short time than ever before. Thanks Canon!! ... Japan - Kawaguchi Lake and Hakone by Martin Bailey
(1329) 2002-11-12 - 2002-11-14
From November 11 to 13, 2002, we rented a car and hit the road. First stop was Kawaguchiko (Lake), where I took the Mt. Fuji sunset and Mt. Fuji at dawn shots.
We then drove through the mountains to Hakone and Ashinoko (Lake) by late afternoon. The Hakone shots were all taken the following day (14th). (7 photos)

In May 2002, my wife and I went for an 11 day holiday in Australia. It was not a photo holiday as such, but I took a fair number of photos. The better of which I'll publish here on TrekEarth as I get to them. (9 photos)

Japan - 3 Days in Kyoto by Martin Bailey
(1329) 2001-11-19 - 2001-11-21
I spent 3 days in Kyoto from the 19th to the 21st of Novemember, 2001. My wife and I had actually taken my Mum there during her stay with us in Tokyo. I was trying to take as many photos as possible without trying their patience too much. I didn't succeed. They got angry with me on a number of occasions. (8 photos)
