Shan Poy Sang Long festival
by Fabian Blandford
Held in Burma and by Shan communities in Thailand it involves the ordination of young boys as novice monks in the Theravada Buddhist tradition. They are dressed as princes to copy Rahula, the Buddha's son and first novice. The family will stay at the temple for three days or more and on the final day he will ordain into the orange robes and stay in the temple for as little as a week to as long as he wants.
