Since Cartagena has always been the most important Spanish naval base in the Mediterranean it was heavily defended. Some 20+ fortresses and other military installations can be found around the city. Now most of them have been abandoned. One of the most impressive installations can be found at the Cabo Tiñoso peninsula. It consists of three artillery batteries. La Batería del Atalayón, Castillitos and Jorel.
