Some of them are quaint old ancient or mediaval centre, others are fashionable tourist gems in a recently discovered wonderful place, and there are extremely poor peripheric slum districts.

The common is crowd and the reason of crowd is the desire or constraint to live there.

Utterly concrete or wooden towns, whitewashed cultural centres, kashbah communities, ghettos, favellas... etc. Together it is better.
