Nantes was the capital of the duchy of Brittany for 1100 years, from 530 to 1532, when Brittany was joined to the kingdom of France through the marriage of François I to Claude, daughter of Anne de Bretagne.
Then, Rennes became the capital. But Nantes and its region Loire-Atlantique remained part of Brittany until 1941, when Pétain decided to swap that department to the region "Pays de Loire".
However, according to a survey, a majority of the
population would like to be breton.
