The term "chiaroscuro" has a number of uses in art. To me, it means the predominance of shadows with a few significant areas highlighted, such as one sees in many of Carravagio's paintings (where it is called "tenebrism" - see the article on "chiaroscuro" in Wikipedia). I am also inspired by Rembrandt.
