| I don't know how useful XP2 would be for you Darren, its properties stand in direct opposition to traditional black and white films. It isn't a real 400-speed film; scans from a pro-lab looked great shot at ISO400 but at home on my film scanner I can't get enough shadow detail out of it at ISO400. Shooting at EI200 solves this to a large extent. It scans remarkably easily-- very fine grain, fairly sharp but low contrast so you can stretch the levels all over the place; it's like working with soft dough. You don't need any noise reduction software generally. If you do decide to try some, get it scanned as a 16-bit TIFF if you can with no contrast adjustments-- you can't stretch it much at 8-bit without it getting serious gaps in the histogram. It apparently prints in a traditional darkroom too having no orange mask which I shall be trying in the next few weeks. |
