Stonethrowing was popular in the East, specially in Diyarbakir it seems. I know many travellers who were hit by stones. I my self was once attacked in neighbouring Urfa. Interestingly, this behavior seems to have disappeared. Foreigners (perhaps Americans included) are now generally treated as "friends" in this part of Turkey.
