I have been reading the forums with some sadness .. so far .. and I have not gone down my list of TE friends that far yet .. so far I have found very few that have left .. As far as I am aware it is impossible for somebody to simply "take" copyright in the manner people were concerned about .. and if an image is misused .. at least in this country the damages one can claim are very much based on intent ... if somebody were to take one of my images and use it illegally I can probably only get the value of what such an image would normally sell for from them .. on the other hand .. if I can show that they willfully disregarded my copyright then the damages could be much higher .. which is why I started putting the copyright symbol in the bottom corner of my image .. if somebody were to steal the image and crop that out ... that would be a willful infringement .. and if I found somebody who did that I hope I would have the motivation to pursue them. Sadly though the one time I have found somebody illegally using one of my images it was on a blog eulogizing her recently deceased mother .. needless to say I let that go ... that said on the whole I think people need to learn to live with the fact that by sharing an image online you are opening yourself up to theft .. I sell a bunch of images each month .. and once somebody buys one legally .. and puts it on their website .. what stops somebody else from stealing it from there? .. nothing .. and given that a vast proportion of commercial and amateur use of photography is digital and online there is no way to avoid it unless you keep your images at home in a shoebox .. All that said .. the greater issue is with the copyright issue as a symptom of a vast array of problems with the current management of TE.
