| Hi Lisa, I heard a radio program early Friday morning on BBC (re-broadcast here on our National Public Radio) about a woman who was making a documentary regarding how the Germans feel about America and Americans now that George W. Bush is out of the picture. Turns out the Germans always have liked America and Americans, but they are put off by the fact that Americans act like they believe everyone understands them - Americans are so, well, arrogant that way. It is interesting, too, because I write in these posts like I talk, for the most part, and seldom really change any of my diction or colloquialisms because I just kind of assume that people all over the world will "get it". I have been thinking about that radio show, and one of the first things that came to mind was my baseball posts, of which I have done two, one here and one on TL - I have made several references to baseball, as well. I never thought about the fact that really, only two countries actually have professional baseball to the degree we Americans have it. Just the US and Japan, I think. Heck, I didn't even try to go out and look if any other countries have baseball. That's my own arrogance and ignorance. Anyway, I think I had a point when I started this, oh yeah, there it is - I don't think this photo requires any knowledge or if anyone even cares about baseball or the St. Louis Cardinals or all that rot. I think this photograph is more about color and lack of symmetry (it was actually more about color and light when I posted it, but it seemed to have sparked a composition debate for a little while). So I'm not going to hold it against you, Lisa, if you don't have an inkling of what baseball is about or if you don't even care a whit (which, you really should not, unless you live in a baseball town like St. Louis or New York or Chicago), it just makes me happy that you enjoyed the shot for the same reason I took it. If you ever make it to St. Louis, though, you will have to join me for a Cardinals game - just for all the red and green... You will get to see plenty of arrogance, too. Have a great week! Reed |
