Hi Phil - Thanks so much for the constructive comments. The first thing I need to do is stop shooting on the "P" or Auto mode. I got a wide-angle lens for Christmas, although that wouldn't help in this situation. :) I'd like to upgrade my camera but a) still have a lot to learn (composition, exposure, etc.) with the camera I have; and b) need to see what happens with my job next month!
