Hi Mark,
like you i not often need a high fps and my choice of the D300 wasn't made specifically by this, but by the others specificities of this camera i'll not introduce.
The time when i need high fps (and fast and accurate af with tracking abilities) is winter when i go mountain. I ski everyday but i always get half a day to shot snowpark jumpers and even if D40 is an excellent litle dslr it don't match in all way with D300.
A friend who work in the same company give me it D300 with nikon 70-200 2,8 and that's what manage my choice. I'll could have already buy it (i make mariage in summer since last year) but as i said your mother in a recent mail, i had buy an appartment and i'll move at end of this month so i prefer wait summer (and with the announce of D400, D300 price will down from 200 euros in september.
I'm happy had speak with you, have a good day and see you soon.
