Hi Bill
Yes we did make it to the summit - we did not find it at all difficult and being 2000m lower than Kilimanjaro there were no altitude problems. In saying this we did notice people sucking on aerosol cans of oxygen.

We started half way up from the fifth station and walked for 5-6 hours to a hut at about 3400m. Next morning we started off again at 2am. As soon as we stepped out of the door of the hut we joined this enormous single file queue. We could only take about 3 steps forward and then we would have to wait for the person in front of us to take another step. Thus it was a very slow and almost surreal experience with just a line of headlamps showing the way to the top. We were on the crater rim in time to see the sunrise and then we walked right around the crater to the highest point etc. The trip down was probably the hardest as you walk down the road which just seems to zigzag back and forth and go on forever.

The Japanese say a wise man climbs Mt Fuji once and a fool twice. As the climbing season only lasts for 2months (July and August) this explains the enormous queue.

I don't know why Shintoism has not spread - good question.
