Hi Christine,
Thanks for commenting on my photos, it's appreciated :)
I'm very happy to finally have another comment on this photo, as it's probably my personal favourite of the ones I've uploaded on TE. As for the life of the tree, I can only imagine. A tree this big in a desert would have taken so very long to grow to this size, but then it may have been dead for 500 years? Who knows? There were certainly no other trees anywhere close.
In this part of China on the edge of the Taklamakan Desert, desertification is a serious problem as the land has been poorly managed, over worked, and over grazed by cattle in an unsustainable way, hence the desert keeps growing and green things dying. It's the same story for much of Inner Mongolia, which was once the largest and most fertile grass land in the world, and the delicate ecosystem had been managed by nomadic peoples for millennia, but it's now more than 80% desert!
Thanks again, and best regards
Lee
