To pboehringer: Monitor CallibrationJPlumb::2008-06-09 17:48
Hi Peter, about 2 months ago I did some workshops for people, and told others that their shots were too dark. I even asked one lady why her snow looked a little yellow. She wrote back and told me the snow looked white to her. I then took a look at the calibration strips on the bottom of the photo page, and I found I couldn't differentiate between the last 3 grey / white strips. This was a little upsetting to say the least, as I had no idea I had a problem until then. Still not believing, I found a couple of websites where you can do an assessement of your calibration. They are http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/viewing.htm and
http://www.digitalmasters.com.au/Monitor_Calibration.html . I took snagits, of these and made a jpeg up with pieces from all three, and stored this on a memory stick. Armed with this stick I then went looking for a monitor. It was amazing what I saw, probably 80% of the monitors in 3 different stores were poorly calibrated and I spent a couple of hours playing (they were very patient with me) to set one up so I could see the differentiation presented on my little calibration tool. I finally got it, purchased a new monitor, wrote my apology letters (retractions on the workshops) and I've been thrilled ever since. Now I can get into shades that just weren't there for me before. The complete histogram is open to me. Long story short, I think we should all check our monitors periodically, it makes a real difference. I do now.

With respect to admin going to 300, check out the properties of one I posted last week at just shy of 300K on Treknature, here. It has actually grown a little larger than that now somehow.

Thanks, John
