Hello and thanks for your comments. I don't think fashion has really changed. The turban is still dominant in most parts of Afghanistan, while the felt cap is most common in the mountain areas north of Kabul and in northwestern Pakistan. It became widely known, and perhaps popularized, because it was worn by the legendary mujahedin commander Ahmed Shah Massoud and his men from the Panjshir valley.
