| Dear Sarju, The whole area is a dried out lake, and the thingies sticking out of the ground are a sort of limestone chimneys. The sulphurous gases that created the chimneys in the first place are steaming from the top. Lac Abbé means "the stinking lake" because of the gases, but it really doesn't stink at all. The area is filled with chimneys and gases coming out of the both the ground and the chimneys, and is perhaps the most remarkably place I ever saw. Take care, Nana |
