actually on that day if i remember correctly there were lots of waves like this. if you've got a storm and winds out at sea you get a lot of big waves in the Monterey area. i think a big reason is that the sea floor drops off quickly as you go outward and so waves don't slowly attenuate as they would if the sea floor was gently rising.
