Isabel,

So nice to be welcomed back, thank you.

Yes, it is hard to link this relaxed image to the events and that is exactly why I like this photo so much. We are all calm at this point... a relaxed pose and flowers... you can almost forget the uniforms... there are the protesters, the police, and me, the observer, all at peace for now.

I found the people in the Distrito Federal to be both unified (in their hopes, in their pride for Mexico) and also divided (in their view of the election and of current events), and at the same time everyone, no matter what their politics, was kind to me. It is exactly this unity and division that I hoped this photo would communicate.

As you say, while these officers are at their leisure here, they are also policia, so who knows what their presence will bring to the situation. At this moment nothing... they and the protesters are at rest and calm and I watch... one big happy family... but events will tell. Lopez Obrador continues with his campaign even now, Claderon remains in control for the moment, and events in Oaxaca are dangerous.

The rope, as you noticed, is important, and it will show up again in at least one other photo from this time. To my mind it is the dividing line between one side and the other. At one moment it is just symbolic, and the next moment it is real.

Thanks for your comments. I see that many of our friends seem to be absent now. I hope I will see them again, but it is great to hear from you.

Be well.
